Rideshare is a gig economy that became popular in 2012 when Uber burst onto the scene in a blitzkrieg attack of global proportions. While there were a few start-ups involved in ridesharing, none of them scratched the surface of success. It was after Uber made ridesharing a home-based business model, that the new app-based economy become a lucrative and much sought-after model. In fact, it was due to Travis Kalanick's megalomaniac nature that truly drove the company to success. You can decry Kalanick as much as you want; Uber would not be as big as it is without his vision and determination driving behind the company's exponential growth.
